Tribal Exhibition by Denis Laurent

Denis Laurent is a French painter based in Phnom Penh. He arrived in Cambodia 27 years ago for a mission and fell in love with the country. Auto-didactic, he had for a long time hesitated between his studies in Biology and his passion for arts. Even though science triumphed, painting never left him and Denis Laurent now counts an impressive collection of over 1,000 artworks. His first exhibition in Cambodia was in 1998.

As Director of Kantha Bopha Children’s Hospitals, and even before then, art has always been his escape, doubling as a form of therapy. His artwork, made with emotion and spontaneity, also depicts what Denis Laurent has seen in Cambodia over the years – more particularly, sculptures from Ratanakiri. In fact, the artist is attracted by symbols and tribal attributes such as totems and ornamentations. The exhibition is then representative of a brutal reality that Denis Laurent displays on canvas, revealing at the same time an intimate part of him.

Sofitel around the world make it a point of honor to promote art and culture, particularly inspiring local talent, and the Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra is no exception. Over the past years, the Phokeethra Group has been actively participating in the Phnom Penh art scene through regular exhibitions within the hotel. Phokeethra Group aims at expressing its active investment and commitment to nurture the arts in Cambodia.
