Born in 1971 in Cambodia’s Kandal Province, Nou Sary grew up in a humble rice-farming family before embarking on a remarkable journey that would shape his life as an artist. At the age of 12, he left his rural village for Phnom Penh, where the support of a local shelter gave him access to education and the chance to pursue his dreams.

Balancing work as a security guard with night classes at the Royal University of Fine Arts, Sary studied painting and sculpture, graduating in 1999. His talent soon brought him opportunities to learn from international artists at the French Embassy gallery in Phnom Penh, followed by a workshop in Paris and further studies at the Saint-Étienne Higher School of Art and Design in France. Despite financial struggles that led him to train as a chef for a time, he persevered and received his Diploma in Fine Arts in 2006.

After more than a decade abroad, Sary returned to Cambodia in 2013 and eventually settled in Siem Reap with his wife and son. Today, his work reflects a deep connection to his Cambodian roots while embracing the influences of his artistic journey across continents.
